{"id":111,"date":"2019-02-26T19:53:57","date_gmt":"2019-02-27T00:53:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/koreapeacenow.org\/?p=111"},"modified":"2019-03-09T14:20:50","modified_gmt":"2019-03-09T19:20:50","slug":"leaders-of-womens-peace-movements-respond-to-outcome-of-kim-trump-summit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/koreapeacenow.org\/leaders-of-womens-peace-movements-respond-to-outcome-of-kim-trump-summit\/","title":{"rendered":"Leaders of Women\u2019s Peace Movements Respond to Outcome of Kim-Trump Summit"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Hanoi, Vietnam&nbsp;<\/em>\u2014&nbsp;A global delegation of women peacemakers in Hanoi expressed\ndisappointment in the outcome of the second summit between U.S.&nbsp;President\nDonald Trump and&nbsp;North Korean&nbsp;Chairman\nKim Jong Un, but emphasized the importance of\ncontinuing to support efforts between the two countries to end seven decades of\nhostilities and work towards the signing of a peace agreement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is\na huge missed opportunity and a disappointment to Koreans who\u2019ve been waiting\n67 years to see a decisive end to the Korean War,\u201d said Christine Ahn,\nexecutive director of Women Cross DMZ and a prominent Korea expert. \u201cDeclaring\nan end to the Korean War will be an important step to demonstrating their\ncommitment to transforming the relationship from one of war to peace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe\npast two summits have been important building blocks,\u201d said Liz Bernstein,\nexecutive director of Nobel Women\u2019s Initiative. \u201cGoing forward, there must be a\nmore robust official diplomatic process, as well as the inclusion of civil\nsociety, especially women, that have on-the-ground expertise and insight that\ncan help both governments come to greater understanding.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTransforming\n70 years of enmity doesn\u2019t happen overnight,\u201d Ahn continued. \u201cTrump and Kim\nhave clearly made strides in building trust, which was exemplified by Trump\u2019s\nacknowledgement of the harmful effects of sanctions on the North Korean people.\nWe believe the groundwork has been laid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To\nensure that ending the Korean War is broadly supported by the U.S. government,\nthe women leaders are supporting a recently introduced&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/khanna.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/release-reps-ro-khanna-barbara-lee-and-andy-kim-introduces-resolution-calling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Congressional resolution<\/a>&nbsp;that calls for a final settlement of\nthe Korean War and the establishment of a peace process.&nbsp;\n\nThis delegation of women is\npart of the forthcoming&nbsp;<em>Korea Peace Now!
