{"id":32,"date":"2018-12-18T17:38:48","date_gmt":"2018-12-18T22:38:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/koreapeacenow.org\/?p=32"},"modified":"2019-03-09T14:21:41","modified_gmt":"2019-03-09T19:21:41","slug":"northeast-asia-roundtable-on-women-peace-and-security-principles-of-unity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/koreapeacenow.org\/northeast-asia-roundtable-on-women-peace-and-security-principles-of-unity\/","title":{"rendered":"Northeast Asia Roundtable on Women, Peace and Security: Principles of Unity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>December\n4 \u2013 6, 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2018 has been a year\nof historic change on the Korean Peninsula where the threat of nuclear war has\nbeen eclipsed by the prospect of finally ending the 70-year Korean War with a\npeace process and a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2018, Korean\nleaders, Kim Jong Un, Chairman of the State Affairs Commission of the\nDemocratic People\u2019s Republic of Korea (DPRK) and Moon Jae In, President of the\nRepublic of Korea (ROK), signed two far-reaching agreements to establish\npermanent peace on the Peninsula:<em>&nbsp;Panmunjom Declaration for Peace,\nProsperity and Reunification of the Korean Peninsula and September Pyongyang\nJoint Declaration<\/em>. These agreements included opening a liaison office,\nresuming family reunions and civil society engagement, and turning the\nDemilitarized Zone into a true peace zone. The leaders of the United States\n(US) and DPRK also held their first summit ever and signed the June 12 Singapore\nJoint Statement committing \u201cto establish new US-DPRK relations in accordance\nwith the desire of the peoples of the two countries for peace and prosperity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given the critical\nwindow created by recent diplomacy, it is more urgent than ever for women from\nthe Northeast Asia region, United States and globally to come together and\nsupport the Korea peace processes \u2013 DPRK\/ROK and US\/DPRK \u2013 and to call for\nwomen\u2019s inclusion throughout. To ensure an ongoing peace process, we call for\nthe following immediate actions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The United States,\nDemocratic People\u2019s Republic of Korea, Republic of Korea, and China should work\nto declare an end to the Korean War and establish a process to negotiate a\nPeace Treaty to replace the 1953 Armistice Agreement, as stipulated in Article\n4 Paragraph 60. A Peace Treaty can eliminate the risk of a nuclear war and lay\nthe foundation to build trust.<\/li><li>The US must begin to\nnormalize relations with the DPRK so that a substantial period of co-existence\nand interdependence can provide the security assurance needed for complete\nde-nuclearization. Three actions the US can take now: 1.) open a liaison office\nthat is agreed upon by both countries to facilitate diplomatic engagement\ntowards building mutual trust; 2.) End the travel ban on US citizens from\nvisiting DPRK which has impaired longstanding US humanitarian aid programs and\nprevented people-to-people engagement; and 3.) Lift broad-based sanctions\nagainst DPRK that harm all people, particularly the most vulnerable.<\/li><li>In all future peace\nprocesses, there must be substantial representation and inclusion of women\u2019s\ngroups to advance women\u2019s meaningful participation in the Korea peace processes\nas mandated under UN Security Council Resolution 1325. Research now\nsubstantiates that when women are meaningfully included in peace processes, not\nonly is a peace agreement more likely to be reached, it is far more durable (at\nleast 15 years). There must be mechanisms for women\u2019s groups to contribute to a\nholistic peace that yields gender equality and genuine security.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Peace on the Korean Peninsula would offer hope, and a practical roadmap, for the region and the world by modeling a process of reconciliation and demilitarization aimed at creating genuine security. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2018 has been a year of historic change on the Korean Peninsula where the threat of nuclear war has been eclipsed by the prospect of finally ending the 70-year Korean War with a peace process and a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":73,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-32","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-press"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.4 -
