Dear\nPresident Donald Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We\nare representatives of Korea Peace Now!, a women-led global campaign to end the\nKorean War. Our coalition\nincludes Nobel Peace laureates, activists, professors, human rights lawyers, a\nretired Army colonel, and a recipient of the U.S. Presidential Medal of\nFreedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We are writing to\nrespectfully urge you to find a peaceful settlement while the window of\ndiplomatic opportunity is still open. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Christmas has been\nan occasion to call for peace on earth and goodwill to all people. During World\nWar I, there were spontaneous truces in which soldiers would cast aside their\nguns, crawl out of the trenches, and embrace their enemies. We appeal to you to\ndemonstrate the same magnanimous spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A return to\nescalation would not only reignite the danger of nuclear war, but also seriously\nset back the political momentum for peace painstakingly built over the past two\nyears. Ever since the Singapore Declaration called for \u201cnew U.S.-DPRK relations\nin accordance with the desire of the peoples of the two countries for peace and\nprosperity,\u201d we have seen growing and unprecedented support for\nnormalization. A recent poll conducted\nby YouGov and Data for Progress shows that 67 percent of Americans now support\nnegotiating a peace agreement with the DPRK, and support is even higher among\nregistered Republican voters, at 76 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As a global movement\ndedicated to ending the Korean War, we have consistently advocated that a\ndurable resolution of the conflict requires a peace agreement, sanctions\nrelief, women\u2019s participation in the peace process, and the right of all to\nlive without fear of nuclear war. Any delay prolongs the suffering of those who\nwish to live in peace. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Next June, the\nKorean War will have languished for 70 years. We must all push back against the\nforces, habits, and structures that perpetuate it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
As peace\nactivists, we are doing our utmost to educate the public, organize peace-loving\npeople everywhere, and encourage all sides to find a resolution. Thanks to the bold\nsteps you have taken to meet and engage with each other, the historic\nresolution we helped introduce in the US Congress this year to formally end the\nKorean War with a peace agreement now has over 40 co-sponsors, and the list is\ngrowing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
There can be no\nprogress or resolution, however, without meaningful talks. Too often, one step\nforward in diplomacy is followed by two steps back in opposition. This\nChristmas, we urge you to finish what you started and do what no other US and\nDPRK leaders have succeeded in doing: end the Korean War. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
You have the power\nto heal millions of hearts broken by three generations of war. We are counting\non you to implement the vision of peace that Koreans, Americans, and all\ncitizens of the world wish for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
May peace prevail\non the Korean Peninsula and around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
